Sri Lanka’s Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary
More precisely, the Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary is located between Chilaw and Puttlam in the Puttalam district of the country’s northwestern province, specifically between the coast and the Chilaw-Puttlam railway line.
One of Sri Lanka’s six RAMSAR Wetlands, Anawilundawa is unique because of its proximity to three incredibly diverse ecosystems: the seashore, the mangroves, and the freshwater tanks. Numerous bird species have found it to be a favorable nesting and breeding location thanks to its distinctive biological context.
It is spread across 1,397 hectares of forest land. It consists of nine tanks: three secondary tanks, each of which is connected to the other and functions as a single unit, as well as six enormous man-made cascading tanks, named Pinkattiya, Maradansola, Anawilundawa, Mayyawa, Surawila, and Vellawali. In addition to serving as a natural habitat and shelter for 150 species of water birds as well as a few endangered species of fish, amphibians, mammals, and reptiles, these tanks store water for irrigation and cultivation.
A significant breeding colony of herons, the Open-bill, Great cormorant, White ibis, Egret, Stalk, Pheasant-tailed jacana, and the Purple swamp hen are just a few of the bird species that may be found here. Here, 20 different kinds of mammals have been identified, including the toque monkey, 74 different butterfly species, the rusty-spotted cat, the fishing cat, the Indian otter, and the slender loris. The majority of indigenous and resident birds can be seen throughout the entire year, while the best times to see migrating are from October to April.
