Overview
Colombo, which is on the island’s west coast and has a population of almost two million, is the city with the highest density. Colombo was once a renowned harbor. The city is advantageously situated on a natural harbor that was once used for East-West trade.
Around 2,000 years ago, Indian, Greek, Persian, Chinese, and Roman traders were aware of Colombo’s past as a significant port. (However, Colombo Harbor remains one of South Asia’s busiest ports.)
Since 1505, when the Portuguese made their initial landing in Colombo, the city has served as a focal point for East-West cultural influences. The capital of Sri Lanka was established in Colombo by British colonial rulers in 1815. Since that time, Sri Lanka’s administrative capital has relocated to the nearby suburb of Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, although Colombo continues to serve as the nation’s financial and economic hub.
