Overview
The first civilization to emerge in Sri Lanka was Anuradhapura, which dates to the fourth century BC. For well over a millennium, it served as the island’s secular and spiritual capital.
Some of the most revered Buddhist sanctuaries on the island can be found at Anuradhapura, which was built around a piece of the fig tree where the Buddha is supposed to have meditated and attained enlightenment. This tree, known as the Sri Maha Bodhi, is said to be one of the oldest in the world and serves as the spiritual center of Anuradhapura.
Temples all throughout the island have successfully received cuttings of this revered “mother tree.” The 40 sq km of sprawling ancient ruins at Anuradhapura include the Isurumuniya Vihara rock temple, the Royal Pleasure Gardens, three massive ponds, huge, towering dagobas, and the remnants of a palace.
