Overview
Kandy, the nation’s cultural center and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located 115 kilometers from Colombo’s coastline in a picturesque valley ringed by mountains. The only artificial ornamental lake in Sri Lanka, Kiri Muhuda (Sinhala: the sea of milk), is located directly in the middle of Kandy’s city center. All of Sri Lanka’s other tens of thousands of artificial reservoirs were created primarily for irrigation, with secondary consideration given to general use and wildlife preservation.
Only a few steps separate the lake’s southwest corner from the garden of the Temple of the Tooth. The red tile roofs and golden canopy of the Temple of the Tooth are dwarfed by the Udawattakele Bird Sanctuary’s heavily forested green hills. The Tourist Office and Cultural Triangle Office are situated in the courtyard of the Temple of Tooth.
A large number of ancient Buddhist temples may be found in Kandy. A big systematic riot of fire, light, and sounds of fire play dancers, drummer dancers, dancers, drummers, piper dancers, pipers, and caparisoned elephants is the big Kandy Esala Perahera Pageant, the yearly grand homage-rainmaker festival in the display of Tooth Relic of Buddha across the city.
